Woodson, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) promotes, researches, preserves, interprets, and disseminates information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community. ASALH Membership ASALH is a recognized 501 (c)3 non-profit organization. Schomburg was a Puerto Rican of African and German descent who moved to the United States and researched and raised awareness of the great contributions that Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Americans have made to society. Woodson purposely chose the second week in February between the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Such setbacks fueled Woodson’s efforts to ensure the continuation of the ASNLH. When the Foundation later withdrew all of its funding, Woodson’s worst fears were realized. Black families are in danger. Dr. Woodson began to put in “sixteen to eighteen”  hour work days at the Association’s office in a modest Washington, D.C. row house which he owned. Black activism associated with the civil rights and black power movements of the 1960s infused new energy into the ASNLH. The 2008 convention took place in Birmingham, AL and the 2009 convention took place in Cincinnati, OH. To maintain the solvency of the Association, Woodson aggressively pursued funding from private scholars like George Bancroft and from major grant agencies such as the Carnegie Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Phelps Stokes Fund, the Rosenwald Fund, the Social Science Research Council and the controversial  Committee on Interracial Cooperation. [2]. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom it is observed in October. [ citation needed ], At the convention ASALH organizes plenary sessions and workshops, facilitates scholarly presentations selected from the “Call for Papers,” sponsors a black history tour of famous landmarks in the city, and hosts a youth day for high school students in the area. The Associations‘  mission statement describes its purpose “to promote, research, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.”  The Association’s vision statement still refers to itself as “the premier Black heritage learned society…[which]will continue the Carter G. Woodson legacy.”, Dr. Woodson, known as the father of Negro History, created two publications in support of the ASNLH, the Journal of Negro History and  the Negro History Bulletin. The same year ASALH established The Woodson Review, a magazine that promotes its Annual Black History Theme, including it as part of its Black History Kit. He published more than 15 books on African-American history, taught for decades at Howard University, and served as president of Wilberforce University, and founding president of Central State University, both in Ohio. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has morphed from being the obsession and possession of Dr. Woodson to the obsession and possession of an entire people and a nation.
