NIEHS recognition of Black History Month will feature a Feb. 14 talk by Damon Tweedy, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry at Duke University. Other highlights include the Oxford Black History Month 100 series, which will run weekly in four parts, and showcase examples of Black excellence from around the University and further afield. Woodson, who helped found “The Journal of Negro History” in 1916, has been called the father of black history. Our commitment to inclusion runs far beyond annual awareness activities, and underlines the importance of social empathy and being an ally to others. Darlene Dixon, D.V.M., Ph.D., head of the NIEHS Molecular Pathogenesis Group in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) Laboratory, is one of those being recognized. The event will also reflect on some uncomfortable legacies of Oxford’s past as well as ongoing work to improve the diversity of the University’s student body, with initiatives unveiled to encourage successful applications from Black undergraduate and graduate students.

The list ranges from research to individual events, resources, cultural artefacts and people themselves. ’However, Black History Month has always been my opportunity to discover how truly impressive and pervasive black excellence has always been. In honor of Black History Month, we highlight 19 African American scientists and engineers who made important contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

The campaign will focus on some of the contributions that Black people and people of Black heritage have made throughout history, to the University, and society as a whole. The precursor of Black History Month was Negro History Week, begun in February 1926 by historian Carter Woodson, Ph.D., and other prominent African Americans. However, these Scientists of colour are not the only ‘Hidden Figures.
