I think you only have to do the 4 that he specifically shoots out to damage the shield, and you also have to hit the 3 colored buttons to go into the tower and deactivate the wall of light to access the right half of the map. If you did the entire thing without dying and it didn't give you the challenge, then you must have run into a glitch that seemingly nobody has encountered yet, and if so there's nothing you can really do about that but report the glitch and try again.
