The video story had a good concept, a good plot showing events that were very realistic, but it left out key events such as the revenge of Cassie against Lilian Jean, how the blacks were treated in school, and the revenge of the Logan children getting back at the white bus driver. It is a very moving book and I have yet to read its sequel. Another thing, Mr. Morrison never was told by Little Man that Stacey went up to the Wallace store in the book. This is a core novel used at my school and my students and I were eager to see the movie and compare it to the book we so enjoyed reading. The phrases “what the devil” and “my Lord” appear a few times, and the n-word appears a number of times. The next day, Mama recruits people to boycott the Wallaces' store because they are the cause of most of the trouble between the blacks and the whites, and are alleged to be members of the "night men", who are also known as the Ku Klux Klan. The book is very good; it is gritty, down to earth and tells it like it is (in some parts it is quite violent). He tells Mr. Wallace about the Logans' organized boycott of his store and how Mrs. Logan does not teach from the county-issued textbooks because she believes they contain biased information. Mr. Granger, Mr. Wallace, and a school board member fire Mrs. Logan on charges of teaching "unapproved things". At the time of the book's publication, Kirkus Reviews said, "Taylor trusts to her material and doesn't try to inflate Cassie's role in these events, and though the strong, clear-headed Logan family is no doubt an idealization, their characters are drawn with quiet affection and their actions tempered with a keen sense of human fallibility.
