if you get like a jar of white i think its pro cure, cure all your smelt, herring, squid, shad strips, what ever you use in it, and put plenty of salt on after the cure. During the course of the day, Stuart and I were wondering if we should pack our smelt in rock salt or maybe Brine N' Bite to toughen up the smelt. then while you have all your bait in the brine, put your favorite scents or oils in there to mix things up. 6-8 hours. :rolleyes: Actually, Rollmops have a pickle in them. I was talking with a guy at the new Dick's in Hillsboro about pink worms and worm threaders etc. We have never done anything to our bait we do the same thing run a hook and half hitches. Got a jar of the stuff right here. The best sturgeon bait on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers outside of the estuary (lower 25 miles) is smelt, with sand shrimp coming in second. I find it hard to believe that sturgeon like taco's...:eek: I've never done anything with my smelt other than just unthaw them, toss a 4 or 5/0 in their head and half hitch up the body.
Anchovies for sturgeon bait I will put my smelt, sand shrimp (ghost shrimp, mud shrimp), and anchovies, up against anyone’s “secret bait”. I wonder what the deal is there? He admitted he hadn't been steelheading since he was 10 years old, he's a sturgeon guy.

My buddy caught one on a lunchable in the Willamette a few years back !! This particular brand of rollmop has sliced onions in it. In case you are targeting those health concious fish the label also states " Wild Herring: A natural Source of healthy Omega-3 Fatty Acids NO Transfats" Which is probably why the stuff works...So I'm told.
Freezing Baits. I'd quit getting Sturgeon advice from the guy at Dicks. Louisiana Hot sauce? i also use 80# test line with spin n glos in front of it on a 6 to 8/0 hook :D. Oh something we use for bait is the belly strips from salmon and tuna we have also used crappie fillets, I think those worked better for crab than sturgeon. If you want to freshen up your bait just wrap more stuff on top of it. Williesteal17 and I went sturgeon fishing today. Our Fish Bait Products Pickled Fishing Bait. but in general i always use something that will go with worms or shrimp in the summer, and baitfish and squid in the winter :). I do know for sure that Rollmop does catch sturgeon..Not sure about a subway sandwich though...I think I would try Quiznos first:D, do you guys make your own or buy your own roll mops?
View Full Version : How do you prep your sturgeon bait??? I think the best way to fish for sturgeon is to have a variety of stuff. Guide’s Choice ® Pickled Sturgeon Candy pickled products are available as Herring, Sand Shrimp, Shad, Smelt, and Squid. This will give the brine solution enough time to draw the moisture from the bait and penetrate into the flesh. They might be sweet pickles though. When freezing baits for future use, they should be soaked in the brine for approx. I use alot of shrimp scented lunker lotion, seems to work best for me. I sandwich my very short leader between two live sandshrimp (belly to belly) Wrap them on the leader just above the hook with any kind of stretchy thread, I wrap them on there tight around each segment of the sandshrimp ( Makes like a cigar with a hook hanging out) Then I wrap a couple night crawlers on after that. I like anchovies Tracy likes smelt and sandshrimp. i can see the salmon strips working when they are spawning, cuz the sturgeon just feast on them when they are dead. If I heard him right this scent would actually sink to the bottom and stay down leaving a scent trail on the bottom. This works really well and stays on there for hours. I still have my best sturgeon luck with sandshrimp / Worms..Or Herring / Worms. I haven't seen the stuff but will try it as soon as I find it. if so, i want to learn how to make em. hey there is no smiley face option when editing). It works for steelhead and salmon. Most of the scents out there are some sort of oil type stuff.
