The Nickel Boys, a book about the horrors of a fictional reformatory school in 1960s Southern USA, was my first experience reading Colson Whitehead. Bought in advance of release on the strength of the reviews. Slowly the author pulls back and you see the world outside the ward too and realise what's in the ward is a microcosm of what is outside.
