When there is lag, I have to assume someone else brought it with them or one of the players is really far away, because I also can have perfectly fine matches with no lag. Why is smash 4's online so bad? They have the technology. Even with an Ethernet connection and good high speed internet, I haven't heard of anyone not lagging when playing for glory.
Smash 4. Born just in time to explore the wondrous and terrifying depths of the internet. Unfortunately I lagged even when fighting a friend 15 mins away, it wasn't as bad but still noticeable, however he wasn't using Ethernet so that probably had something to do with it. Outside of a complete misuse of the word, it's really not a big deal. The game uses a p2p (peer 2 peer) based server, Your connection might be solid, but if the other player's connection is trash then it doesn't matter. I’d rather deal with that than all this mess.

I always use the ethernet adapter to play Smash online, but that doesn't eliminate lag. trying to raise gsp is not an option. Also, for any switch owners, obviously you can't say for smash on switch, but is there bad lag on multiplayer games on that console? Do they not have that in Deluxe? it can be played that way maybe you just need to git gud at the ruleset? Battle arena is like waiting your turn which can be fast or you can be waiting for 5 minutes or more.

what i do know is that smash ultimate has a failing online system. Another thing: Elite Smash is great, but for me, it makes me so unmotivated. 100mb download, 10mb upload speed, with 27ms ping to Cali (where I think the servers are located) and I still can't play a game because of lag.
Actually, P2P is objectively superior to server/client in 1v1 situations, and it's even debatably better up to 4v4. Press J to jump to the feed. People will keep glorifying Sakurai and his team as the absolute best, so nothing will change. I have tried arenas before, but since they are reliant on other people’s’ internet connection, I haven’t been able to get through a match without enduring extremely terrible lag - like worse than the norm on regular online. Ultimate has myriad online problems, according to several players, ranging from matchmaking to connection errors. those aren't fun at all.

The annoying part is you cant just SD against someone who is laggy. Your GSP go down so much and I hate how it works like that. If you VC with a room, they can know your intentions better, but most have a negative view of taunters they don’t know.

my gsp is currently hovering around 400,000 with ness, and it's only that low because every game i have played was the result of dysfunctional matchmaking. But I notice, the higher my gsp gets, the better matchings I get. No, I shouldn’t have to use another character.
